Football: Dani Alves remains at liberty after the rejection of appeals from the prosecution and the civil party

He won’t be going back behind bars, for now anyway. Dani Alves, sentenced to four and a half years in prison for rape, was released after appealing and posting bail. The prosecution and the civil party appealed this decision, without success.

In a statement, the Barcelona court said it rejected “the appeals presented against the decision granting bail to the detainee Daniel Alves”. To obtain his release, the former right-back of FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain had to pay bail amounting to one million euros. It took him five days to raise this sum.

A decried release

His release from prison took place on March 25. The rape for which he was convicted took place on the night of December 30 to 31, 2022, in a nightclub in Barcelona. He was placed in pre-trial detention a few days later.

The prosecution and the civil party strongly opposed his request for release. For them, the risk of flight was major. The Barcelona court nevertheless accepted, with, in addition to the bail, the ban on the former footballer from leaving the territory and the withdrawal of his Spanish and Brazilian passports.

He is also prohibited from approaching within one kilometer of the victim’s home and workplace, as well as from coming into contact with her. Dani Alves must appear at the Barcelona court every Friday. The prosecution and the civil party also appealed against his sentence of four and a half, which they considered too low.
