FC Bayern basketball players aim for Bundesliga title after Euroleague disappointment

The Euroleague season ends for the FC Bayern basketball players this week. After missing the playoffs in the European premier class, managing director Marko Pesic now wants to win the Bundesliga title in order to be satisfied with the season.

When asked this week what his conclusion to the season would be, the ex-professional replied: “If we become champions: very good!” The Munich team recently had to watch other teams celebrate the championship four times in a row and want to bring the title back to Bavaria. After winning the cup, they can also celebrate the double this season.

“Season of missed opportunities”

Coach Pablo Laso’s team had also hoped for more in the Euroleague and wanted to reach the knockout phase. However, this can no longer be achieved for the Bundesliga club before the last main round match on Thursday (7:00 p.m./MagentaSport) away against AS Monaco. “I am very disappointed that this team, whose potential I am convinced of, did not show the consistency that is needed to at least reach the play-ins,” concluded Pesic.

The managing director found: “The bottom line is that this is a season of missed opportunities.” He was referring to the games that Munich narrowly lost and lost their chance of making the playoffs. “We lacked five percent self-confidence and self-assurance to take the next step,” he said.

Coach Laso also mentioned that too many injuries throughout the year had weakened his team. Based on the quality of the squad alone, the Spaniard believes Bayern are strong enough to make it into the playoffs.

Pesic hopes for continuity in the squad

For the next season, Pesic and Laso only want to strengthen the team in certain areas and hope that top performers such as world champion Isaac Bonga do not move to other – especially financially stronger – clubs in Europe.

“It would be my wish that we manage to keep the team together as best as possible,” said Pesic. “We have to make adjustments here and there, but nothing essential.” With ex-NBA professional Serge Ibaka, the people of Munich are preparing to possibly have to wait until the fall to see whether he will extend his contract.

According to Pesic, the most important step to take the team to the next level is the league title. “First you have to become German champion. Titles and successes are irreplaceable in the development of a team.”
