European Cup Silver for Charlotte Nettesheim and Strong Showing for Julius Kitagawa at Judoka Showdown

690 judoka from 34 nations met last weekend for a showdown in the capital.

There was again, among other things Charlotte Nettesheim from JC 90 Frankfurt (Oder). In the extra lightweight up to 48 kg she met the Italian Alice Revelli in the first fight. 10 seconds were enough to send her opponent onto the boards with Harai-makikomi. In round 2 she faced Cosima Hoeps. She also won this fight early. In the pool final she met Mathilda Wamhof, whose defensive fighting stance our athlete was unable to cope with in the last three encounters. Her coaching team with Michael Rex and Susi Garling suggested two tactical routes that she should choose between. And the plan worked. After two punishments, her opponent had to go on the offensive and Lotti had her turn. “It’s great how Charlotte held the line,” sums up Michael Rex. “The fight wasn’t pretty, but it doesn’t always have to be,” adds Susi Garling.

In the semi-final there was actually supposed to be a repeat of the final in Bad Blankenburg. At the Thuringia Cup, Charlotte Nettesheim confidently defeated the Dutchwoman Indy Pannegitter and so the coach and athlete stood astonished at the judogi control when the Dutchwoman could not be found. Due to an injury, the tournament was over for her and our Brandenburg athlete was in her first European Cup final.

In this, she initially didn’t have a good fight against the Frenchwoman Lalla-Dounia Lahrifi. The Frenchwoman worked tactically cleverly and kept the Frankfurter at a distance. In the course of the fight, Charlotte Nettesheim set good accents, but they were not compelling enough. She also couldn’t get through her Sankaku, which she feared in the ground, so she was left behind. After bronze in Porec and Teplice and gold in Bad Blankenburg, she now wins the silver medal.

“In the coming weeks it will be important to find a way to score a big hit against this opponent. Maybe at the European Championships in Sofia,” says trainer Susi Garling about the upcoming tasks with her protégé.

“It could go on forever,” jokes Susi Garling. “At the same time, I’m looking forward to being able to train in peace with Lotti and the training group after the training camp in Berlin.”

Participation in the European Championships was the big goal for this year for both Malin Neumann and Charlotte Nettesheim. “They were European Championship replacements, NK2 squad and now final year. This goal was logical.” It is very sad for Malin Neumann, who is waiting for her operation date after her serious shoulder injury. “She is incredibly hard-working and determined and really deserves it.”

Julius Kitagawa from UJKC Potsdam fought in the 50 kilo class. After an opening defeat, he had to worry about progressing. But his opponent Yehonatan Augenstein from Israel became the pool winner and took our athlete into the consolation round. There he fought confidently, won with Ippon and achieved early Waza-ari scores over time.

Only the Israeli Eyal Martziano, who later won bronze, stopped him and won tactically by punishing our athlete. He came seventh in the tournament in a field of 49 athletes.
