All in one day: World champions against Asia’s No. 1 | DBB ladies against Nigeria

That’s what you call a real basketball treat! And in a double pack too! Germany’s world champion men and the Olympic women on one day in one arena! You can run out of superlatives! At the Friday, July 19, 2024the two German Olympic teams are testing in the Uber Arena in Berlin – EuroBasket 2022 final round arena.

Tickets for the double-header are now available in the DBB ticket shop.

The women open the Berlin Basketball Festival at 5:15 p.m. against Nigeria before the world champions take on Japan at 8:00 p.m. For all four Olympians, the encounters a few days before the start of the Olympic Games are absolute tough tests. German basketball fans shouldn’t miss this.

World champions against Asia’s No. 1

Germany against Japan! World champions against Asia’s No. 1! The German NBA stars Dennis Schröder, Franz and Moritz Wagner and Daniel Theis against great quality on the Japanese side with the NBA players Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe or the strong center Joshua Hawkinson. All of this in a great, atmospheric arena with 14,000 spectators… You can hardly expect more from the DBB men’s last test match on German soil before the Olympic Games in Paris.

DBB women against Africa’s Olympic team

Germany against Nigeria. The German women’s team Satou Sabally, Nyara Saballyand Leonie Fiebich against the top team from Africa. Both teams made really strong preliminary groups for the Olympic basketball tournament in Lille. Germany is trying to advance to the quarter-finals in Paris against the USA, Belgium and Japan, while Nigeria has had it no less difficult against Australia, France and Canada. From this point of view, women’s basketball fans can look forward to a very interesting game between two outsiders at the Olympics. Outsiders, but they represent a very dangerous opponent in every game against the supposed favorites.

“Very special night of basketball!”

“This is a great opportunity for us to play in front of our home crowd before we head off to the Olympics. A game against another team that will be in Paris is excellent preparation for what lies ahead. We are grateful for the opportunity to present our team in Berlin at the same time as the men. “It will be a very special night of basketball,” says the national coach Lisa Thomaidis.

“First of all, it’s a great thing that we managed to present our two Olympiatams on one day in the same place. There really is something for every German basketball fan, just a few days before the Olympic Games. The women will be complete for the first time, as the WNBA players will join the team shortly beforehand. In this respect, the game against Nigeria will be particularly important. I can only highly recommend our ‘double header’ to you,” says Armin Andres.

Team Germany Women

What a drama it was in Belem, Brazil, in February this year! The German women’s Olympic qualification was hanging by a thread before the final and decisive game against Brazil. Both Sabally sisters were badly injured, but gritted their teeth for the big dream of the Olympics and threw themselves into the sometimes overly tough events. The fact that they could have afforded a defeat by up to seven points did little to calm the situation. It was a real battle. Satou Sabally At times only played with one arm due to her shoulder injury, Leonie Fiebich and Marie Gülich Because of the Brazilian toughness, they found themselves on the indoor floor several times, but the DBB women remained in control for long stretches of the game. Until, towards the end, their strength waned and Brazil sensed their chance shortly before the end with their own four-point lead and possession of the ball. But Germany fought back, avoided extra time with luck and skill and even won 73:71 in the end. The Olympics had been reached! This summer you can now expect a largely unchanged formation. The most important thing will be that all players stay healthy.

Team Nigeria

The Nigerian basket hunters reached the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in a much less spectacular way. The first game between Nigeria and African “colleague” Senegal was the deciding factor at the Olympic Qualification Tournament (OQT) in Antwerp/BEL, as both African teams were nowhere near the level of their other competitors, the USA and Belgium. However, Senegal initially set the tone, leading immediately after the break with 49:37 and then in the 29th minute with 57:49. However, the decisive remainder of the encounter belonged to Nigeria, who took the lead with an 11-0 run (57:60, 33′) and never relinquished it, even though it remained extremely exciting until the final minutes (65:67, 38.). Finally, Nigeria prevailed 72:65 and was able to celebrate after the first of six qualifying games in Antwerp. The most striking actress was the 188cm tall woman Amy Okonkwo, who plays for Landerneau Bretagne Basket in France and averaged 15.3 points and six rebounds in OQT. In any case, the Nigerian team will be very athletic and physical.

“Interesting game for us and the fans”

“It’s always great to play in Berlin. Of course especially for our players who were born in Berlin or who play or have played for ALBA. They can play in front of their families and friends. We want to put in a really good performance in our last preparation game on German soil. The Japanese team is getting better and better, they just won against China. The fact that Japan qualified for the Olympic Games shows the quality of the team. This will definitely be a very interesting game for us and of course for the fans in the arena. The Japanese play a different style and they come with two NBA players,” says national coach Gordon Herbert.

“Our last test match on German soil before the Olympics is certainly a real highlight. The Japanese have improved enormously in recent years and showed great performances at the World Cup. Now NBA star Rui Hachimura will be there and will make the Japanese a very dangerous opponent. We are really looking forward to the game and always enjoy coming back to the Berlin Arena,” said the DBB Vice President responsible for competitive sports Armin Andres.

Team Germany Men

This summer – assuming there are no injuries – you can expect almost the same German team as at the World Cup triumph last September. In any case, the DBB team will compete in Berlin with the strongest line-up, because the Olympic Games in Paris start just a week later. The NBA players as well as the EuroLeague players and the basket hunters from the BBL and other European leagues have all “committed” to being available to the German national team without restrictions for a total of three years. After the great successes (Bronze EuroBasket 2022 in Germany | Gold World Cup 2023 in Manila), the reigning world champion also has a lot planned for Paris 2024. But as Germany’s three-point specialist Andreas Obst recently put it: “Now we’re walking around with the target on our backs. Everyone really wants to beat the world champion!” The Herbert team will do everything in its power to ensure that no one succeeds.

Team Japan

Not many would have expected the Japanese national team to develop as positively as it has in recent years. But along with the general and rapid professionalization in the Japanese association and the Japanese league, the Japanese men have also continued to improve. Even without their absolute top star Rui Hachimura from the Los Angeles Lakers, the team made it to Paris 2024 at the World Cup and sparked real storms of enthusiasm during their appearances, and not just on Okinawa. The Japanese recently achieved a 76:73 victory against their Asian arch-rivals China in the Asian Cup qualifiers, their first victory in 88 (!) years. So a truly historic event. If the Japanese are able to play with their top line-up in Paris, you can certainly have some confidence in the team. In any case, a jump into the quarter-finals does not seem to be out of the question.

Five official games for men

The international history of Germany and Japan consists of five official games. Germany won four times and suffered one defeat (basket ratio 406:316). The defeat dates back to a test match on August 24, 2019, when the DBB selection lost 83:86 in front of 20,000 spectators in Saitama shortly before the World Cup in China. The last game so far took place at the 2023 World Cup in Okinawa, Germany won 81:63 on August 25, 2023. A German men’s national team has played in Berlin 56 times and won 26 games.

An official women’s game

There has only been one official international match between the women’s national teams of Germany and Nigeria. On July 30, 20024 they met at a tournament in Ankara/TUR. It was close, Nigeria won 75:73, Linda Fröhlich led the German team with 18 points.
