Dominican Judo Federation Athletes Aim for Paris Olympics: President Gilberto García Outlines Qualifying Journey

Gilberto García, president of the Judo Federation, proclaims that his athletes have been accumulating points since January for places in Paris

The Dominican Judo Federation does not sleep with the preparation of its athletes who are seeking tickets for the Paris Olympic Games.

Gilberto García, in conversation with Hoy, emphasizes that they are realistic and aspire to get two tickets to Paris, but if things continue as they are going, reaching three would not be bad.

“The world level of judo is very high and we know that, that’s why we tell the truth,” he emphasizes.

He reports that his athletes will return to the country in the next few hours to participate in the judo competitions of the Military Games, where everyone will defend the colors of their military institutions.

“On April 7, the National Judo Team will leave for Brazil where they will carry out a training base,” García anticipates.

Then they will go to Oceania

He adds that the Creole judokas will go to a Qualifying Tournament in Oceania and America.

On April 29

At the end of this month they will travel to Valencia, where – he specifies – they will compete in the last three qualifying events for the Paris Olympic Games.

The closest to Paris

The athletes Medickson del Orbe, Robert Florentino, Moira Morillo and Eraima Silvestre, from San Pedro de Macorís. “They are scoring to look for points,” he says.

He states that he has to thank the Creso Group and the International Judo Federation for the funds provided for the preparation of the athletes.

García maintains that they started with the first Olympic qualifier last January in Portugal and have participated in six others.

Seven qualifying events remaining

He expresses that there are six qualifying tournaments left for Paris, but, he says, we will have to wait because there are a lot of funds needed.

MIDEREC will support preparation in Brazil

He argues that now the training base that will go to Brazil, in the middle of this month, will have the funds provided by the Ministry of Sports, through the Head of Mission.

Four Judo athletes are still in the race to qualify for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Moira Morillo, in the +78 kilograms, is one of the judokas who is on a good pace to obtain a place for the Olympic Games, although there are still six qualifying events that add points.

Then it follows Medickson of the Orb (81 kg), who to date has a place for the continental quota. There are also athletes Robert Florentino (-90 kg); Eiraima Silvestre (-78 kg) y Eraima Silvestrewho give their best in each qualifying event.

In the last version of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, Robert Florentino was the only Creole to compete for the Dominican Republic in that competition.

“Morillo and Del Orbe are working very hard, that does not mean that the rest do not have a chance,” added Gilberto García, president of the Dominican Judo Federation.

The Judo tournament at the Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 27 to August 2.
