Dobbs brings passion and talent to JMU football program

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Bob Chesney says James Madison defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill breaks players into three groups. There’s players that like football, there’s other that love football, and the rest live football.

Jacob Dobbs lives football.

The transfer from Holy Cross is making an immediate impact on the field and in the locker room for JMU. What JMU is getting is a player who was a William V. Campbell Trophy Finalist, a First-Team All-American, and a two-time Buck Buchanana Award Finalist.

Dobbs was also a two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year at Holy Cross.

“I can’t really take my mind off of football. I’m obsessed with it,” said Dobbs.

Dobbs grew up in a football family. His dad Lou played at Wayne State University.

“He just wants to give you everything he’s got every single play. You will never question his effort. You’ll never question his intensity and you really won’t question his toughness,” said Chesney. “He’ll continue to keep getting better and better and better. That’s what he’s working on every single day.”

What drew Dobbs to JMU? For one it’s to play for Chesney, his only collegiate coach.

“He invests in everyone, not just as football players but as human beings,” said Dobbs. “It’s really easy to listen to someone and follow them when they actually care about you as a whole human being, not just as a football player. I think that side of him just gets people to buy into his program and culture.”

Before Chesney was hired at JMU, Dobbs knew all about the Dukes. He says he’s familiar with their success and rich football tradition. His goal is to keep the traditions alive.

“Just seeing the support and buy in from everyone. I can’t wait to run out here,” said Dobbs. “Even for the spring game and seeing everyone in the stands. Just feeling the excitement from JMU Nation.”
