FC Schalke 04 is in a relegation battle, but seems to be turning the corner in time. Another home win was achieved against Nuremberg. The traditional club can now point to a small series.

FC Schalke 04 defeated 1. FC Nürnberg and gained a little breathing room in the relegation battle of the second division. Coach Karel Geraerts’ team deservedly defeated the Franconians 2-0 (1-0). Thanks to their success, the Gelsenkirchen team increased their lead over the relegation place to five points, at least until Sunday, and moved within two points of Nuremberg. In front of 62,278 spectators in the sold-out Schalke football arena, Kenan Karaman (42nd minute) and Paul Seguin (86th) scored the goals for the Revierclub, which climbed to twelfth place in the table.

“You follow the other results. So we knew that we could take an important step today. We took a lot of risks and fortunately we were rewarded. There was a lot of pressure on the kettle today,” said striker and captain Simon Terodde.

Schalke, who have only suffered one defeat in their last six games and are unbeaten in six home games, played energetically forward from the start. Yusuf Kabadayi had the first big chance to score for the hosts in the first minute. Thomas Ouwejan (16th) and Karaman (22nd) had further good opportunities, but were denied by the strong Nuremberg goalkeeper Carl Klaus. Shortly before the break, the 30-year-old was powerless. Karaman shot well into the left corner.

Karaman misses a penalty

After the break, the goalscorer missed a great opportunity to extend the lead with a penalty kick (56′). Karaman only hit the crossbar. On the other side, S04 keeper Marius Müller deflected a shot from Can Uzun just wide of the goal (58′), a free kick from Nuremberg’s Jannes Horn hit the crossbar (84′). However, Schalke remained the better team overall and secured the decision through Seguin shortly before the end.

“From the back it looked like the last ball was just sloppy. This is frustrating because we have seen the rooms. But there weren’t enough chances to score. It doesn’t work that way,” said Nuremberg goalkeeper Klaus angrily. “We are seven points ahead, but we still have to be careful. Otherwise it will get antsy again,” said the goalkeeper, looking at the table and a possible relegation battle ahead.
