Dennis Schröder’s Future with the Brooklyn Nets Uncertain Ahead of Summer Olympics

New York (dpa) – For Dennis Schröder everything is completely different this time. Before the sensational World Cup title, Germany’s basketball star played with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA playoffs until the end of May last year. This season ends for him in the North American professional league in mid-April before the Olympics.

Five games before the last main round game, it is clear that Schröder’s Brooklyn Nets will miss out on tenth place and therefore no longer have a chance of making it to the finals in the strongest basketball league in the world. What will happen next for the leader of the national team at the Nets in the year of the Summer Games in Paris: completely open.

“I would like to stay, there’s no question about it,” Schröder told the German Press Agency. “You just have to see whether both sides like it and how they want to go into the future.” The 30-year-old world champion captain’s contract is valid for another season, but that doesn’t mean much in the NBA.

Vacation before Paris

Schröder has been playing in North America for eleven years – he has long since internalized and understood that the league is big business. Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, the Lakers again and then at the beginning of the season he signed with the Toronto Raptors before moving to the Nets: Schröder got around. And he is a realist. He gets along well with current coach Kevin Ollie, but the 51-year-old was not able to convince the Nets so much that his future can be considered secure. And a new man may have other plans.

Before the Olympic Games in Paris, Schröder will definitely go on a real vacation with the family. “After the season, I definitely won’t touch the basketball for two weeks,” he announced. The main round in the NBA ends on April 15th. The German national team’s first test match is scheduled for July 6th against France.

Until then, Schröder wants to spend time in Germany, probably also travel to the USA with his wife Ellen for a few days to “get things done” – and be there for the Orlando Magic’s first playoff game. His world champion colleagues Franz Wagner and Moritz Wagner, who have never played in the hot season of the NBA in their careers, play there. “That was my wish, that I would definitely support and be there,” said Schröder. “That’s what I agreed with them. And I want to keep my word.”

Thoughts of resigning after the World Cup

After the European Championships and World Cup, we want to have fun together again at the Olympic Games. After winning gold at the World Cup in Asia, Schröder briefly considered resigning. That would have been “a blatant departure”. “But because I’ve never played in the Olympics, I couldn’t imagine not playing for the national team anymore,” he said. On the contrary: “I would like to play in the national team until I’m 40, like Dirk (Nowitzki) did.”

He is currently no longer in great demand with the Nets. It is even likely that, despite the double double of twelve points and eleven assists, Schröder will only be used little or not at all in the Nets’ 115:111 win against the Indiana Pacers. “If they come to me and say we want the young players to be on the pitch, then I would be happy because then they will be on the pitch a lot,” said Schröder. “But if I’m supposed to play, then of course I’ll play.”
