Defending Those Who Heal: Hospitals Implement Self-Defense Courses for Healthcare Workers

Rome, 16 April 2024 – The increasingly frequent attacks against health workers, parasanitary workers and reception service staff have led some hospitals to take action. As happened at “Umberto I” Polyclinic of Rome, where the self-defense courses organized on the occasion of the “National Day of Education and Prevention against Violence against Healthcare Workers” began.

Il Global Self-Defense Method was the main protagonist, proposed and implemented by Maestro Michele Vannacci, 6th Dan black belt and 3rd MGA level, former national teacher for the training of self-defense instructors of the State Police, the Penitentiary Police and teacher of Motor Science at University of Cassino for the subject “Combat Disciplines”.

The training and self-help course for doctors and healthcare personnel, in addition to practical lessons, includes an important part on verbal and non-verbal communication and therefore on communication techniques. de-escalation which have the objective of decreasing the intensity of tension and aggression in interpersonal relationships.

The initiative was organized byteam of the Polyclinic, was coordinated by Professor La Torre and involved the staff of the emergency room, pediatrics and psychiatry, i.e. the departments where the greatest critical issues relating to attacks by patients or their relatives are found.

The relevance of the course was underlined by the attention given to the initiative by the major newspapers, including The Corriere della Sera e The Republic. In addition to the importance of this event, the occasion highlights the caliber of many shy and preciously capable people who, like Maestro Vannacci, have been providing their important educational, sporting and human work for many years, in silence and without great echoes. .
