Andrey Rublev lost to Alexei Popyrin in straight sets

Big disappointment for Andrey Rublev at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo: The defending champion, who initially benefited from a bye in the principality, was defeated by the Australian Alexei Popyrin in the second round with 4:6 and 4:6 give.

For Rublev, the ultimately clear defeat against Popyrin marked the next setback in a messed up season so far. Most recently, the world number six was eliminated early twice from the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami.

Rublev could also lose a few places in the rankings after his early defeat. Popyrin continues after one of the biggest wins of his career in the round of 16 against Alex de Minaur, who defeated Tallon Griekspoor in three sets.
