Dedicated Judoka from La Carpio Represents Costa Rica in Brazil

David Domínguez is a resident of La Carpio who has very clear his priorities in life.

Since he was 12 years old, he began training judo and now that sport is his great passion, so much so that he has put aside the temptations and bad advice of people who have offered him drugs or partying because he is focused on his discipline.

Right now David is 22 years old and he is more excited than ever because this month he will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to represent Costa Rica in the Pan American Senior Judo Championships that will take place from April 26 to 27.

He told La Teja that he finds it incredible that that 12-year-old boy who came to train Judo to accompany his older brother is now a professional athlete.

“I started accompanying my older brother, Jedneel, to train and then I got involved too. Little by little I was obtaining good results in the tournaments and that motivated me because I stood out quite a bit.

“I feel that sport has helped me not fall into temptations like drugs because it keeps me away from many things. I always think that I have to prepare, that I have to be one hundred percent to give good results. I worry about keeping my times in training, that keeps me away from the street, I don’t put much thought into outside things,” said the young man.

David says the discipline keeps him focused on the sport he loves so much and focused on his dreams and goals.

“Sometimes they invite you to parties and things, but I know that I am training, I am committed to what I do, to the sport, that is why I distance myself from that reality.”

David said that preparing for an international competition is not about playing and it is not for the lazy.

“I have two training sessions a day, in the morning three hours that are mostly for physical conditioning and at night two and a half hours and that is more technical and specifically judo, everything that has to do with the fight. I train right here in La Carpio, in the Sifais building.”

Despite David’s joy at having qualified for the international competition, there is something that worries him: the silver.

“When they gave me the news that I could go to the competition I felt very happy, now I have the pressure to go and bring that medal, I have trained a lot for this and I think I will do well.

“The Federation gave us the endorsement to participate, but we have to pay for everything: tickets, lodging, food, I go with my coach so it is the expenses of both of us that we have to cover, in total we need to raise $3,970 (about ¢ 2 million)”, said the athlete.

David has been in the Senior category since last year, which is the oldest, before he was in the Junior; This will be his second competition in Senior.

“When I was in Junior I got a bronze medal in a Pan American in the Dominican Republic, that memory motivates me and makes me dream big,” he said.

David works with his father in a supplier in La Carpio, but he says that he dreams of going to university, it is a goal that is clear to him, he is just not sure yet what career to study, it will probably be engineering.

Regarding sport, the young man has a dream for which he is already working.

“I believe that the goal of every high-performance athlete is to go to the Olympic Games and bring a medal to the country,” he said.

The judoka took the opportunity to send a message to young people who live far from the sport.

“It is true that maintaining discipline is hard, but everything has its reward. All these years that I have trained I have learned many things, I have seen places, I have lived many beautiful experiences.

“There are good and bad days in this, you have to know how to handle that, but all the effort you make is worth it,” David added.

The athlete is training very hard to do well in Brazil, he only rests on Sundays because he must be in a good rhythm for the competition, but he does it with pleasure because of the enthusiasm he has.

David began the discipline of judo at the age of 12 and has achieved more than 40 medals between gold, silver and bronze. In addition, he has participated in National Games, where he has managed to be the national champion on three occasions, representing the province of San José and has been selected to fly the Costa Rican flag in international competitions in Colombia, Panama, the Dominican Republic and now in Brazil.
