André Boniface died this Monday at the age of 89, reports Sud Ouest. The three-quarter center had worn the French XV jersey 48 times from 1954 to 1966, winning the Five Nations Tournament four times (1954, 1955, 1959 and 1962).
Born in Monfort-en-Chalosse, he never left his Landes, in Dax for one season before wearing the Stade Montois jersey for twenty years (1952 to 1972). Club with which he was crowned champion of France in 1963 (against… Dax) and played in two finals in 1953 and 1959.
Inconsolable over the death of his younger brother, Guy
André Boniface embodied “French flair”, this idea of offensive play that the Anglo-Saxons admired. Elegant on the pitch, he built his legend as a flamboyant player.
