Ajax has signed Hesterine de Reus as its new head coach. De Reus signs for two seasons and is the successor to Suzanne Bakker, who was told in January that her expiring contract will not be extended.

Former international De Reus worked for the KNVB for many years, where she trained various national youth teams. De Reus later became national coach of China (under 20) and Jordan. After a short period as coach of PSV, she became national coach of Australia, where she left in 2014 after disagreements within the playing group.

As a technical expert at UEFA and FIFA, De Reus subsequently supported associations in the development of women’s football.

“It feels fantastic to take on this great challenge,” says the 62-year-old coach in an Ajax press release. “Football in my own country, and especially women’s football, is close to my heart.”

“In addition, Ajax is a great club that clearly wants to make progress. I look forward to contributing to strengthening the women’s branch and of course allowing the team to play at an even higher level.”

‘A lot of expertise’

To the outside world, the decision in January to say goodbye to Bakker was a strange one. Bakker, who has been with Ajax since 2018, was quite successful. Under her leadership, the club became champions last year and survived a tough group in the Champions League this season.

Women’s football manager at Ajax Daphne Koster did not want to explain too much. “That can damage a person,” Koster said at the time. “It’s about where we want to go. We think we need a different coach. I still support that decision.”

When presenting De Reus as the new coach, Koster speaks of a “dedicated coach with a lot of expertise. She is well aware of developments in the sport and has also been closely involved in the growth of women’s football at home and abroad.” “.
