Dark Days and Hopeful Plans: Remco Evenepoel’s Road to Recovery and Return

These have certainly been dark days for Belgian cycling fans. Because after Wout van Aert had already fallen out of the spring in a drastic way, a week later Remco Evenepoel also fell hard.

Have a speedy recovery

The Belgian time trial champion did this, just like many other top riders in The Tour of the Basque Country. Evenepoel broke his collarbone in that fall and also suffered a fracture in the shoulder blade. But he has good news. “I’m feeling a bit better already,” he said to Het Nieuwsblad.

Evenepoel is now active again, although for the time being it will remain with cycling on rollers. But in the meantime an important decision has already been made regarding his participation in the Tour de France. For example, nothing would change in the planning in the run-up to the Tour, HLN knows.

The planning

After all, the intention would remain to go on an altitude training camp to the Sierra Nevada, and then start in the Dauphiné (2 to 9 June, ed.). After this, a new altitude training period should follow.

If Evenepoel still needs an extra week, the Tour of Switzerland can also offer relief instead of the Dauphiné. However, that chance seems small at the moment. However, Evenepoel will not be present at the Belgian Time Trial Championships on Friday, June 21.

Schepdaal’s Aerokogel will therefore not become Belgian champion in that event this year either. Last year he crashed in Herzele in bad weather conditions, and Wout van Aert took full advantage. Evenepoel will defend his title in the Belgian Road Championships two days later.
