The Danish badminton players did better than expected at the concluded European Championships in Saarbrücken, Germany.

This is the evaluation from Badminton Denmark, which could see the Danes pick up two gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals.

This resulted in a total of 14 Danish medal points. The objective was 12 of this kind.

Viktor Axelsen shockingly lost his EC semi-final. And sports manager Jens Meibom had not calculated that.

– It was a surprise that Viktor was not the one finalist, says the sports manager in a press release and adds:

– Viktor is struggling a bit with his game at the moment, but I know Viktor well enough to know that he will work hard to get his game back on track and get back to his top level.

Several of the women’s singles also disappointed, as neither Mia Blichfeldt nor Line Kjærsfeldt lived up to expectations.

– As far as the ladies are concerned, most did not succeed as expected. There was particular pressure in the women’s singles category due to the end of the Olympic qualification period, which may have affected the players.

– Regardless, both the ladies and we are of course sorry and disappointed that they did not play up to their level, and we will of course evaluate that together.

– However, it should be noted that Julie Dawall played a really good championship and won her first individual EC medal in her career, says Meibom.

Julie Dawall Jakobsen knocked out Line Kjærsfeldt in the quarter-finals, but then lost the semi-finals to Carolina Marin, who ended up winning the EC.

Anders Antonsen won the final in men’s singles, while Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen reached the top in men’s doubles after victory in the final over compatriots Andreas Søndergaard and Jesper Toft.

Overall, the Danes eclipsed the medal harvest from 2018 and have not been better since 2017, when it amounted to 16 medal points.
