Cuenca Hosts Spanish University Fencing Championships with 96 Participants from 28 Universities

● The University Pavilion on the Cuenca campus will host this competition from April 23 to April 26

● A total of 96 participants from 28 universities will demonstrate their skill with weapons in foil, saber and épée assaults

This week Cuenca becomes the university capital of fencing. The University Pavilion of the Cuenca campus will host from April 23 to April 26 the sixth competition within the Spanish University Championships that the University of Castilla-La Mancha organizes this year.

A total of 96 participants, 52 men and 43 women, from 28 universities throughout the national territory, will demonstrate their skill with weapons in foil, saber and epee assaults. Of these participants, Castilla-La Mancha will be represented by three athletes from the region, one from Toledo and the other two from Cuenca, in the epee modality.

In addition, during these championships you can enjoy outstanding figures in this sport, such as the Olympic fencer Araceli Navarro, bronze medalist at the 2022 World Fencing Championship; Álvaro Ibáñez, number 1 in the national men’s epee ranking, and the Breteau brothers, Ignacio and Andrea, second and third in the national foil ranking.

In this way, Cuenca inaugurates its path as one of the host cities of this year’s university championships, benchmarks at the national level. In total, the surroundings of the city will host both the fencing modality that will take place in the coming days, as well as the climbing modality, which will reach the town of Chillarón on May 3 to 5, and others such as men’s volleyball and women’s (May 6-9) and triathlon (June 7-8).

A firm commitment to university sports

The University of Castilla-La Mancha organizes fourteen types of the 2024 Spanish University Championships, hosted by different cities and towns in the region.

In this way, UCLM strengthens its commitment to sport, university students and its territory, becoming a leading university in this field and being one of the universities that has managed to host the most modalities since the creation of these championships.

To date, five Spanish university championships have already been held in which the UCLM has won a total of 8 medals.
