Cuban Judokas Idalis Ortiz and Asley González Named Best Athletes of 2013 by AIPS

Havana, Jan 23.- Cubans Idalis Ortiz and Asley González appear among the nine judokas selected as the best in their countries in 2013, after the vote carried out by the International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS).

The website of the International Judo Federation highlights the presence of specialists in that sport, which also include Maria de Fátima, from Angola, Elkhan Mammadov (Azerbaijan), Yuri Krakovetsky (Kyrgyzstan) and Marie Muller (Luxembourg).

Completing the relationship are judokas, Dashdavaa Amartuvshin and Munkhbat Urantsetseg (Mongolia), and Lucija Polavder (Slovenia).

Ortiz, weighing more than 78 kilograms, and González (90), world champions, were chosen as the most outstanding in their country among all the athletes (fym) that year, and they now share that honor with the Camagüeyan boxer Julio César La Cruz and the baseball player Freddy Asiel Álvarez.

Taekwondo player Glenhis Hernández and pole vaulter Yarisley Silva close the Cuban list recently approved by the AIPS, which chose the three best male and female athletes from their nations.

Hernández and La Cruz also won world titles in 2013, Silva won the world bronze medal and Álvarez was part of the Villa Clara team, which won the 52nd edition of the National Series, and is considered the best pitcher in Cuba at the moment.

Freddy Asiel (best in collective sports), Hernández, Silva and La Cruz (among the 10 most outstanding), also found positions in the annual survey of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation and the Circle of Sports Writers of Cuba. (AIN) (Photos: Archive.)
