Countdown to Paris Olympics: Italy’s Ambitions and Brescia’s Impact on the Games

The countdown has officially begun. At the sporting event of the year, the Paris Olympics, exactly 100 days to go and the wait grows, because on the long wave of the record of medals set in Tokyo, Italy wants to grow and excite again, also thanks to the push of the province of Brescia.

Countdown

The accession of sacred fireyesterday at Temple of Hera at Olympiahas effectively started the journey that will materialize on July 26 next in Paris with the lighting of the brazier that will accompany the tricolor dreams until Sunday August 11th.

In those two weeks our country hopes to be as excited as it did the Tokyo edition in the summer of three years ago, with the Games which became the pride – of Italy and Brescia – in Covid era. A collective rebirth one year after the outbreak of the pandemic, when the exit from the limitations was still far from materialising.

Under the Eiffel Tower

The Games will begin under the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 100 days

In Japan Italy managed to reach 40 medalsdragged by Marcell Jacobs from Desenzano and by the entire athletics team, capable of winning an impressive 5 of the 10 overall gold medals.

Now if possible the medal – and gold – cards are even more for the Azzurri, because at the reconfirmations of the track pursuit led by SummerOf Of the Eagle in taekwondo and of Tita-Banti in sailing, one can legitimately hope to look down on everyone with the swimming star Thomas Cecconwith the Brescian Alice Bellandi in judo, Irma Testa in boxing, Sofia Raffaeli in rhythmic gymnastics and with many others.

Ambitions

Moreover, no later than 10 days ago, the president of CONI, Giovanni Malagòconfided his ambitions in an interview given to our newspaper on the sidelines of the Elly Fanchini day at Tonale.

«What do I expect in Paris? To do well and all the conditions are there. But in sport – recalls Malagò – you teach me that predictions are never predictable. But we have created the conditions to do very well. Improving on Tokyo’s tally won’t be easy, that edition has already been record-breaking. But the expectations and obviously the desires are high.”

To date the accredited blue ones are 218 (equally divided between men and women) in 25 discipline, but the number is destined to grow between the last qualifying tournaments and passes via ranking. «The current projection tells us 50 medals, but this is a figure that takes its time. What matters is the competitiveness index, and here Italy is among the world superpowers. Despite everything,” he says the general secretary of CONI, Carlo Mornatiwith industry studies giving the Italian team credited with a seventh place in the medal table in the shadow of City of Lights.

The people of Brescia

Certainly the fortunes will also pass through Brescia. From the star Jacobs to judoka of warby canoeists De Gennaro ed Horn ad Anna Danesiuntil Vanessa Ferrari. «All top athletes, we know how much Brescia is worth in sport», Malagò always said to Tonale. The hope is that, in 100 days, one of those three metals that change the life of an athlete will (still) be worth it.
