Controversy Erupts as Johan’s Comments Spark Outrage and Accusations of Racism

De Hoop was born in Ethiopia and grew up in Friesland. Johan said that De Hoop is not Frisian. Albert was a guest in the episode of the SBS talk show and was commented that he had to laugh at Johan’s comment. His former colleague Beau van Erven Dorens (53) also spoke out about this.

“I’m in a reflex at that moment. Not a well-thought-out, edited choice, but just at that moment,” Albert says.

“Then it all comes over you and you’re laughing. That laugh is because you think: well, and on to the next thing. I had already given a whole talk about anti-Semitism in that broadcast and when it happened, I have a kind of reflex in your head: yes, I’m not going to make another song.”

It ‘hurts’ Albert that some people call him a racist. “Of course it keeps you awake at night. I think it’s terrible that you get those reproaches and insults, while all my life it has been my top priority that everyone can participate.”

A report has now been filed against Johan. He does not consider his statements racist:
