Champions League: Bayern Munich is in the semi-finals

FC Bayern Munich – FC Arsenal 1:0 (0:0)

After the 2-2 draw in the first leg in London, Bayern were aiming for a place in the semi-finals in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal FC. But for the Munich team it was more about the last remaining chance of winning the title this season – after Bayer 04 Leverkusen became German champions last Sunday. Already eliminated from the DFB Cup, all that remains for Bayern is the Champions League. After Borussia Dortmund reached the semi-finals yesterday, they wanted to follow suit in Munich.

The former series champion from Munich started the party energetically, Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich in particular showed a lot of commitment. On the right side, even Leroy Sané works effectively backwards. Arsenal started to dominate the game a little more, but did not have a compelling opportunity to score in the early stages or in the entire first half. However, Bayern didn’t really have a chance to score, although they also dominated the game at times. The first half was characterized by the tactical testing of both teams. Both remained flawless. Apart from a few long-range shots, little that was worth reporting happened.

In the second half, however, Goretzka headed straight from Kimmich’s cross and the ball hit the crossbar – technically outstanding from both sides. Raphaël Guerreiro was unable to take advantage of the rebound. A little later, as Munich’s pressure increased, something happened that Arsenal couldn’t prevent: Kimmich headed the lead. In the 63rd minute, Sané dribbled, then hit a cross that only found Guerreiro on the other side, but he saw Kimmich and chipped it.

Arsenal, who are still playing for the title in the league, were unable to show any reaction to the deficit until the final stages. Or rather, Bayern allowed little, too little to sum it up as a reaction. Coach Mikel Arteta switched offensively. Kai Havertz moved from the nine to the eight and Gabriel Jesus came on as an additional striker. Nevertheless, the guests still tried. The Munich team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in their first and last season under Thomas Tuchel. There they meet Real Madrid.

Manchester City – Real Madrid n. E. 1:1 (0:1)

In the second leg between defending champions Manchester City and record winners of the Champions League, Real Madrid, both teams also started virtually from scratch – the first leg ended 3-3. As expected, coach Pep Guardiola’s hosts began the first half with a lot of possession and control of the game. Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti were content – also as expected – with waiting for counterattacks and trusting in their own finishing efficiency. In the 12th minute, Rodrygo scored to give Real the lead. After that, City applied more and more pressure. But not much happened until the break.

In the second half it was Kevin De Bruyne who equalized the deserved 1-1 in the 76th minute. City did significantly more for the game, but Real remained unimpressed. The intense game demanded strength from the players and went into extra time.

In extra time, it was the Real Madrid players who showed signs of fatigue, but were able to stop the tireless Cityzens from scoring the decisive goal. It went to penalties. After two missed penalties, Manchester City lost. Real Madrid are in the semi-finals.
