New York, April 15 (EFE).- Caitlin Clark, number one in the WNBA draft with the Indiana Fever and who is called to mark a before and after in women’s basketball in the United States, assured this Monday that her landing in The best league on the planet is not going to transform the way you see the sport.
“I have loved playing basketball since I was a little girl and that is not going to change,” she said as soon as she was chosen as number one in the draft held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.
“The most important thing is to be myself and have a good time. If I do that, the rest will go smoothly,” she added.
The leading scorer in the history of women’s basketball (men or women), Clark arrives in the WNBA after a legendary career in the NCAA with Iowa that only lacked the icing on the cake of winning a title after losing two consecutive finals.
There was no doubt that the Des Moines native would be chosen by the Fever in first position, although tonight the Iowa prodigy said with a smile that she had gotten “a little nervous” just before hearing her name.
“More than anything I’m grateful and lucky to have my family, my friends and my (Iowa team) coach here. I’m just trying to enjoy the moment. I’ve dreamed about this since I was in second grade and it’s taken a lot of hard work, a lot of ups and downs. I’m trying to take it in,” he explained.
“I think the most important thing is that I have always believed in myself. I went to Iowa with the goal of reaching the ‘Final Four’ and we went to two national championships twice. My parents always gave me a lot of confidence since I was a little girl and I think that’s something girls can learn (…). I told my mother before: ‘I’ve earned it and that’s why I’m so proud of this,'” she developed.
In addition, Clark was “excited” to go to a team like the Fever, where she will share a locker room with the number in the 2023 draft: Aliyah Boston. EFE
