Bayern are always at the top. This seemed to be a law of nature, against which the Ten Commandments acted like a non-binding guide. Many in Germany saw it as tyranny. Then came Xabi Alonso, the savior. And suddenly Leverkusen fans run onto the BayArena pitch on a Sunday evening in April and celebrate their first German championship.
In his first full season, Alonso left Bayern behind, trailing behind more than ever since the introduction of the three-point rule. He does it all with a smile, the humble global star. He doesn’t even go to the bigger, richer club, as the market mechanisms supposedly provide.
