Brooklyn Nets Retain Sean Marks as GM for Next Season Amid Turbulent Times

The rumor has been in the pipes in recent months, Sean Marks has indeed been retained by the Brooklyn Nets. Despite the turbulence that the franchise has been going through over the past 18 months, owner Joe Tsai continues to have confidence in his GM.

Shortly before the New York derby against the Knicks, the Nets announced that Sean Marks would still be the General Manager for the 2024-25 fiscal year. But well before the start of next season, many burning issues are waiting patiently on the desk, starting with a coach.

The Nets have been going through a bit of a storm for at least a year and a half – if not more. From the dismissal of Steve Nash to the brutal end of the Kevin Durant – Kyrie Irving era, to the absolute mess against a backdrop of sporting disaster in recent months.

However, it must be said that upon his arrival in 2016, Sean Marks managed to put the franchise – again in a catastrophic state – back on track. With one size difference, the story could be very different. The fact remains that this season, more and more Nets fans are calling for his departure.

The priority file is that of recruiting a coach. While Kevin Ollie is still acting, the front office has reiterated its intention to find a long-term candidate.

“Joe (Tsai) and I have always been in a total partnership. This doesn’t mean we always agree. You have to have good discussions and solid discussions, but Joe and I will make that decision, and he has given me no reason to believe that I won’t be able to make it.” –Sean Marks

Then, regarding the squad, there are again many strong choices to be made. The thorny case of Ben Simmons, the management of Mikal Bridges and his disappointing season or even the file of Nicolas Claxton’s new contract. In short, the work is on the board and all that remains is to do.

However, Marks has shown that he can have a keen nose in the draft (Jarrett Allen, Claxton, Cam Thomas, etc.), but no luck, Brooklyn has no pick this year. While the franchise should have a choice in the Top 10, it will go to Houston because of the famous James Harden trade in 2021. Same story for the 2026 pick, while the 2025 and 2027 can be exchanged by the Rockets.

The future is far from rosy in Brooklyn, but it will be whatever happens with Sean Marks, reinforced in his ninth year at the head of the franchise’s operations.
