Breaking Barriers: The Rise of Power Chair Football in Louvain-la-Neuve

He quickly became aware of the numerous sporting activities developed on the university site. “In disabled sports, judo was very developed. It’s a discipline that I can’t practice, I don’t have strength in my hands and not enough mobility. I played wheelchair football, that suits me. J I had joined the Cens Academy and last year, Mama Jeunesse to play for leisure. Arriving in Louvain-la-Neuve, I wanted a club affiliated with the Belgian Power Chair Football. In this way, we had more credibility to make our grant requests.”

Djevan Socquet was also interested in the project. “We are the co-founders of the club. We received five second-hand chairs, we fixed them up. So far we started with six players in the team. Most are former Charleroi players. We have limited registrations due to our lack of chairs. Many players are interested in the project“, Souligne Hatim Haddad.

Training takes place every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Blocry. “In September, I hope to have new suitable chairs. We have the support of the Province, the Municipality, Adeps, UCLouvain and Cap 48. The chair is important, it must be able to be adapted physically and also electronically to allow easy manipulation of the joystick regardless of the disability.

In the final of the Belgian championship

The Thunderbirds club played the first final of the Belgian championship last Sunday at Blocry against the Red Fox of Brussels. The latter won 6-1. “They have chairs adapted to the discipline, they lent us one for the match. The chair makes a big difference.”
