Breaking Barriers: Tatami – A Story of Freedom and Resistance

TATAMI – A WOMAN FIGHTING FOR THE FREEDOM OF TAR AMIR EBRAHIMI AND GUY NATTIV FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (AGE 13 AND UP) AND ADULTS

The battle for freedom can be fought in a confined space of a few square meters. Specifically on a tatami, the area defined for martial arts fights. Leila, an Iranian judo champion, fights here, unstoppable in her march towards the world title. But outside the tatami the sporting rules go to hell, with threatening phone calls and blackmail to Leila’s coach, Maryam, so that her pupil does not meet her Israeli opponent, a clash that is not looked upon favorably by the regime of Iran, sparking dissent from the athlete determined to get to the bottom of it.

Tatami is a film of great intensity and political force, conducted with all the effective tension of a sporting event, between one match and another, in beautiful black and white, played between the sports facility where the championship takes place and the glimpses into the country of origin of the athlete and her coach, with the regime’s increasingly tight grip on the families of the protagonists. It is no coincidence that the film is directed jointly by an Israeli director and an Iranian director (who is also an actress, here she plays the role of the coach, but we also remember her in Holy Spider, while the sporting efforts are well supported by Arienne Mandi): a beautiful message of collaboration aimed at breaking down prejudices and obstacles.
