Borussia Mönchengladbach tried in the preseason to strengthen themselves with a strong and lively offensive player who, ideally, should pull the strings in the attacking midfield – and can relieve Alassane Plea (31) as a creative element.
Gladbach deal with Rieder fell through – is the hoped-for playmaker now coming?
In 2023, the transfer poker surrounding Fabian Rieder (22) dragged on for months. It was clear early on: the playmaker’s future at his current club is anything but set in stone.
Borussia made an appearance and tried to find the attacking midfielder – and the players were anything but averse to the fact that Gladbach had put out feelers.
In the case of Rieder, a transfer to the Lower Rhine ultimately did not take place – so months of preparatory work were lost and the player profile remained vacant. Do the foals now fill the vacuum?
Just a few weeks after the Rieder deal fell through, Marcel Hartel (28) was arrested for the first time, according to a report in “Hamburger Abendblatt“on the topic in the Borussia cosmos.
Like Rieder, the Cologne native is a playmaker and – similar to the Swiss – played his way into the spotlight through a top season in a weaker league than the Bundesliga.
Rieder had 20 goal involvements across all competitions for the Young Boys Bern in Switzerland, Hartel already had 32 goal involvements for FC St. Pauli in mid-April.
In the last few months, the possibility that Hartel could play in Gladbach after the end of his contract in Hamburg on June 30th has become more and more concrete.
An ex-player from 1. FC Köln in Gladbach? Hartel also tried early on not to let the topic become too big. “In the business today there are enough players who have played for their rivals. So nothing is impossible,” he said on Sky.
Will Borussia complete the hoped-for playmaker deal this transfer summer? The decision as to whether Hartel will extend his contract with second division leaders St. Pauli is still pending.
Last year, Borussia already had an advantage in convincing Rieder from Gladbach: the work of Gerardo Seoane (45). After all, it was the Swiss who gave Rieder his first division debut in Bern.
The “Seoane factor” could also be decisive this year. In his first season at Bayer Leverkusen, the 45-year-old demonstrated that he wants to represent respectable football.
There is no lack of spectacle in Seoane’s first season on the Lower Rhine: especially in the victories against VfL Bochum, the 4-0 against Wolfsburg and the 3-1 against surprise team Stuttgart, the Fohlenelf showed what they are capable of in terms of play.

Borussia always shines offensively, with 49 goals they are outside the top five, i.e. the teams playing for the Champions League. What always proves to be the foals’ downfall is their porous defense.
Apparently the offensive approach is also a factor in Hartel poker. Because like the “Hamburger Morgenpost“ reports, the circle of candidates for Hartel has now shrunk – because some interested parties would not be considered for Hartel due to their gaming system.
Accordingly, ball possession football is a criterion for the 28-year-old, who is facing his next career decision. For him, it’s about being convinced that he will be able to showcase his strengths in the coming season.
This should help Borussia with the approach to play under Seoane compared to some Bundesliga competitors, who rely more on compactness – and primarily try to disrupt the opponent’s game.
Hartel and those responsible at FC St. Pauli emphasized several times that discussions about the future of the leading player should begin in April. A decision is imminent – things are starting to get exciting for Borussia too.
