In the NBA game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Houston Rockets, Boban Marjanovic intentionally missed two free throws – giving those watching a free chicken sandwich.

If a player from the opposing team misses two free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, those watching get a free chicken sandwich. That’s the tradition in the Los Angeles Clippers arena. Rockets center Boban Marjanovic was also familiar with this custom – and so he gave the fans present in the stadium a special gift.

With 4:44 left and the score was 105:97 for his team, the Serb’s first free throw didn’t find the basket. With his gestures, Marjanovic made it clear to the fans that he had no intention of hitting the basket on his second throw either. And indeed: Marjanovic’s throw went wrong – much to the delight of those watching in the stadium.

Ultimately, the Houston Rockets won the game 116:105. Marjanovic was able to make the special gesture especially because the game was no longer about anything for either team. For Houston, the playoffs were already out of reach before the game; the LA Clippers, fourth in the Western Conference, were already determined to be the Dallas Mavericks’ playoff opponents.

Marjanovic will be available for free next summer – his future in the NBA is therefore still up in the air. In Los Angeles, the 2.24 meter tall giant, who is extremely popular in the NBA, used his campaign to at least make positive publicity for himself among the fans.

When Carlos Varela sat in the stands at the Stade de Genève on April 3rd, he couldn’t believe his ears. As the Servette players say goodbye to the 6,000 fans who came that Wednesday evening, whistles sound. The disappointment of losing 1:2 against the clear bottom team Stade Lausanne-Ouchy and thus missing the chance to climb back to the top of the table in the top Swiss league for the first time in over 20 years is obviously heavy. And Varela says into his commentary microphone: “I find that very sad.”
