Blue Jays fall to Yankees in ninth-inning thriller at Rogers Center

The ball traveled well on Wednesday at Rogers Center, but not always to the benefit of the Toronto Blue Jays, who blew a lead in the ninth inning to be defeated 6-4 by the New York Yankees.

The winning streak for John Schneider’s men ended at four games and the local favorites will certainly be biting their fingers since they had the advantage against the Bronx Bombers.

The ninth inning was very difficult to complete for the Jays relief pitchers. Erik Swanson (0-1) allowed three runs, including a long home run to powerful Giancarlo Stanton. Jose Trevino then hit a paying single to tie the game 4-4.

Tim Mayza was sent into the fray and after loading the bases, Aaron Judge gave his team the victory with a two-run single. The Blue Jays were unable to get back into the game in their turn at bat and Schneider was even ejected by the officials due to his challenges to the strike zone.

For Toronto, Daulton Varsho did his part with a pair of homers. The outfielder took the opportunity to climb to the top of the long ball column for the Jays. His four cannon shots allow him to beat Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (3).

Juan Soto continued his excellent start to the season with two RBIs, including one with a solo home run in the eighth inning. He leads the Yankees with a .352 batting average.

Kevin Gausman was the Jays’ starting pitcher for this game. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks in five innings, also adding six strikeouts to his record.

Julien invisible

For the Minnesota Twins, Édouard Julien was unable to help his team avoid a sweep against the Baltimore Orioles following another 4-2 loss.

The Quebecer was shut out in four appearances at the plate and he was struck out three times, which increased his batting average to .175.

With these three victories, the Orioles (12-6) clung to second place in the Eastern section of the American League, behind the Yankees (13-6). The Blue Jays (10-9) occupy fourth place.
