Historic day for football Germany?

April 21, 2012 was the day on which, for the last time, a club other than FC Bayern became champions. SPORT1 digs through history and shows what happened that day – in sport and beyond.

Football Germany waited for twelve years to see a champion other than FC Bayern – except for the record champions themselves, of course. On Sunday it could actually happen.

If Bayer Leverkusen wins at home against Werder Bremen (from 5.30 p.m. in LIVETICKER), the Werkself would receive the championship trophy for the first time in their club history. The Munich team’s title subscription will come to an end, there can no longer be any doubt about that.

The last champion that wasn’t called FC Bayern was Borussia Dortmund. On April 21, 2012, BVB celebrated a 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, meaning the Westphalians could no longer be caught by the competition.

The last time the German champions didn’t come from Munich, (most of) today’s sixth graders weren’t born yet, hardly anyone had a smartphone and Germany wasn’t yet a four-time soccer world champion

SPORT1 shows what else was going on that day.

Kaiserslautern is relegated: FCK is set to be relegated early, despite celebrating its first win under coach Krassimir Balakov. With the 2-1 win against Hertha BSC, the Palatinate team also increases the worries of the Berliners, who are in 17th place. At the same time, FC Bayern saved a 2-1 win at Werder Bremen with a last-minute goal from Franck Ribéry. This prevents BVB from being declared champions three hours in advance.

Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil lead Real to victory in the Clasico: The two national players at the time were involved in the goals in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at FC Barcelona. In doing so, the Royals are laying the foundation for later winning the title. In the duel for the top scorer’s crown, Cristiano Ronaldo overtakes Lionel Messi (41) with his 42nd goal of the season.

Leipzig is once again in danger of missing out on promotion to the 3rd league: The Saxons lose the top game in the Regionalliga Nord/Northeast against third-placed Holstein Kiel 0-1. This means that RB with the then coach Peter Pacult no longer has good cards in the promotion race. In fact, Leipzig still has to complete a regional league round the following year before they achieve the longed-for promotion under new coach Alexander Zorniger.

Sebastian Vettel races to pole position in Bahrain: In qualifying, the reigning world champion secured pole position at the last second. Lewis Hamilton comes in second, followed by Mark Webber. Michael Schumacher is only 18th, but starts from 22nd place because he is moved back due to a gearbox change.

No Gottschalk return to “Wetten,dass..?: ZDF director Thomas Bellut explains that he is ruling out a return of Thomas Gottschalk to “Wetten,dass..?”. Markus Lanz is the “ideal solution” as a successor, said Bellut at a press conference in Berlin. At the same time, the ZDF boss praised the presenter duo Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf: the two are “Internet heroes” and popular with younger viewers. “It’s time for us to build new faces.”

Christian Lindner criticizes the FDP party leadership: A few weeks before the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Liberals’ top candidate gives his party boss Philipp Rösler a message. “We have disappointed some people in the style and substance of our government actions,” said Lindner at the FDP party conference in Karlsruhe. “There has been a loss of trust over the past two years.”

Volcanic eruption in Mexico: The Central American country is preparing for an evacuation: After the eruption of Popocatépetl near Mexico City, the authorities are on alert. The 5,452-meter-high mountain, located around 60 kilometers southeast of Mexico City, ejected large clouds of ash and steam into the air on Friday.
