Barcelona – Valencia 4:2, Barcelona beat a weakened Valencia thanks to Lewandowski’s hat trick

Barcelona won after two defeats, a 1-4 home debacle with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg and then an apparently decisive 2-3 loss in the “Clásico” at Real. A few days later, coach Xavi Hernández announced that he had changed his mind about leaving Barcelona at the end of the season and would keep his contract until next summer.

In the 22nd minute, Fermín López opened the scoring with a header, but the visitors turned the score around before halftime. First, the goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen chose a weaker moment, who in the 27th minute tried to throw over the attacking Hugo Duro, but he failed to make a spectacular dig and the Valencia striker finished into an empty net. The celebration of the 408th start for the club, with which he caught up with Dani Alves in the historical table, was bittersweet for the Barcelona captain. Only the practically unbeatable Lionel Messi is ahead of him with 778 matches.

A few minutes later, it was even worse for Barcelona: Ronaldo Araújo brought down Peter González in the penalty area and converted Pepel’s score from the penalty spot in the 38th minute. Even before the break, however, hope dawned on the home side after a mistake by the Valencia goalkeeper. Giorgi Mamardashvili played outside the penalty area after a poor handling of his hands and was sent off.

Barcelona took advantage of the power play in the second half thanks to three goals from the gunner Lewandowski. The Polish forward beat substitute goalkeeper Jaume Doménech with a header in the 49th and 82nd minutes and a free kick in regulation time. He thus moved to fourth place in the league scoring table, with 16 goals, three goals behind the leader Artőm Dovbyk from Girona.
