Badminton Players Caljouw and Kweekel Secure Spot in European Championships Eighth Finals

Badminton players Mark Caljouw and Joran Kweekel have secured a place in the eighth finals of the European Championships in Saarbrücken. Caljouw defeated Matthias Kicklitz in the second round and Kweekel was too strong for Milan Dratva.

The 29-year-old Caljouw, number 47 in the world rankings, needed 37 minutes to beat his German opponent 21-12, 21-17. In the previous round he defeated the Portuguese Bruno Carvalho in two games.

To qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris, Caljouw must win a medal.

The 25-year-old Kweekel, number 111 in the world rankings, defeated his Slovakian opponent 21-9, 21-17 in 38 minutes. In the previous round he still needed three games against the Pole Mikolaj Szymanowski.

In the eighth finals on Thursday, the Dane Anders Antonsen, seeded second and number four in the world rankings, awaits Caljouw. Kweekel will meet fourth-seeded Frenchman Toma Junior Popov, number 25 in the world.

Tabulation/Peak to quarter-finals

In the mixed doubles, the third-seeded Dutch duo Robin Tabling/Selena Piek qualified for the quarter-finals at the expense of the Scottish couple Adam Pringle/Rachel Andrew: 21-16, 21-8.

The curtain fell for Ties van der Lecq and Alyssa Tirtosentono in the eighth finals. The Dutch duo lost to the fourth-seeded Danish couple Mathias Thyrri/Amalie Magelund: 16-21, 14-21.
