Austrian Gymnasts Prepare for Olympics in Paris: Charlize Mörz, Benny Wizani, and Selina Kickinger in the Spotlight

107 days before the opening in Paris, our Olympic gymnasts presented themselves on Wednesday at the Haus des Sports.

A month ago she made gymnastics history and became Austria’s first World Cup winner in women’s artistic gymnastics: Charlize Mörz. With her World Cup victory in Baku, the Burgenland native also qualified for the Olympic Games in the summer, although the 18-year-old had only had her sights set on taking part in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“It was a bit surprising that I managed to get a qualification – but it was really cool,” said the student. “2028 was simply more realistic for me and those around me because I still have so much potential. I now want to enjoy the competition in Paris, a floor final would be the ultimate. And then as much as possible from this event will apply to the future to take with you.”

Benny Wizani “99%” there in Paris

Austria’s best trampoline gymnast Benny Wizani was also able to qualify for the major event. After his cruciate ligament tear, which he suffered three weeks ago, it was initially unclear what would happen next for the Lower Austrian.

The 22-year-old gave an update on his injury via video connection: “My preparation is of course different than originally planned, but the goal hasn’t changed. For me it’s now about sticking with it mentally and taking on this challenge as a second qualification see. I’m very optimistic that we can do it. 99% of the time I’ll be competing in Paris.”

This “miracle” is said to be possible thanks to conservative treatment. Because the ligament tore in an “isolated” manner (meniscus and collateral ligament remained intact), Wizani will be spared an operation (which would mean the end of the Olympics).

Selina Kickinger as an Olympic hopeful

Selina Kickinger also has the opportunity (alongside Bianca Frysak and Leni Bohle) to qualify for the Olympic Games in France – at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rimini. The 22-year-old is in good spirits and feels mentally and physically fit.

It remains to be seen how many gymnastics aces will ultimately represent Austria in Paris.
