Sonego, after winning the first set 6-4, found himself down 2-5 in the second set: combative as always, the 28 year old from Turin fought back to close the match with a 7-5, taking advantage of the sixth match point available. The last game tells the whole story in an exemplary way wants of the blue not to miss this chance: he had a string of match points, the penultimate one canceled out by one revision from the chair umpire on his second serve (considered good, he was out) when Sonego had already celebrated the victory. The blue did not lose heart and continued to play, until finally earning the decisive point.

For Sonego it could be the turning point match, after the change of coach and the choice to be followed by Fabio Colangelo. Now number 57 at ATP, with this victory he can get closer to the Top 50. The Turin native, after having raised his Coppa Davis – his contribution was decisive, especially in double with Jannik Sinner – went through a complicated moment, never managing to win two consecutive matches in a tournament: he always went out in the first or second round. Even in Monte Carlo, he had lost in the qualifiers against the Belgian Goffin.
