Athletes from Argentine Judo Team Prepare for Pan American and Oceania Championships in Rio de Janeiro

A total of 30 athletes from the Argentine judo team gathered at CeNARD in their sub18, sub21 and senior categories ahead of the Pan American and Oceania Championships that will be held in Rio de Janeiro, starting on April 22. “Here we fine-tune each of the teams prior to the trip,” said DTN Laura Martinel.

The objectives are different according to the categories of athletes. “The youngest seek to add competition to deepen their development and for the seniors it is an important tournament because it grants points for Olympic qualification,” described Paula Pareto’s former coach.

Martinel explained that our country will have a single representative in Paris 2024 that “will be defined by score” since the International Judo Federation grants places by world ranking and then gives a single ticket by continental quota. “The athletes know that there is only one place for the 14 categories that we have, but there is a lot of camaraderie and they help each other to do well in each competition,” he remarked. And she added: “Everyone wants that place, it is difficult to know that only one person will be classified but they do not stop being focused,” she said.

Argentina had two places in Tokyo 2020, that of Paula Pareto (-48kg) for being among the best five in the world and that of Emmanuel Lucenti from Tucumán (-81kg) for the continental quota. Now, we will have to wait until June 23 when the scoring will be closed and there it will be defined who will be the Argentine representative in Paris 2024.
