The 36-year-old from Kiel clearly lost to Briton Emma Raducanu 2:6, 1:6 and was eliminated in the first round, as was the case at the tennis tournament in Miami.

Previously, the other German starters, Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau), had already failed in their “home game”.

Kerber, who reached the round of 16 in Indian Wells a month ago and celebrated her greatest success since her return from maternity leave, was only at eye level against Raducanu at the beginning.

Stuttgart: Kerber concedes early breaks

After an early break she hit back, but immediately conceded another one and had to clearly give up the first round. Even in the second set, Kerber did not recover from her opponent’s two early breaks.

The strong tournament continues on Thursday without German participation. Siegemund also lost on Wednesday against the Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk 3:6, 7:6 (7:4), 4:6. Maria was already eliminated on Tuesday against Elise Mertens from Belgium.
