Angelique Kerber Expected to Play Doubles in German Team Comeback at Billie Jean King Cup

The three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber is expected to only play doubles in her comeback to the German team. Team boss Rainer Schüttler nominated Laura Siegemund and Tatjana Maria as individual players for the qualifying game at the Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) in Sao Paulo against hosts Brazil.

As the draw showed on Thursday, Siegemund (Metzingen) will first face the world number 13 on Friday. Beatriz Haddad Maia, then Maria (Bad Saulgau) faces Laura Pigossi (WTA 119). On Saturday Maria will play against Haddad Maia, and Siegemund will then play against Pigossi.

Only in a potentially decisive doubles final on Saturday would Kerber (Kiel) play with Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied) against Haddad Maia and Luisa Stefani. The former world number one Kerber is back in the squad of the German Tennis Association (DTB) for the first time after her baby break.

In Brazil, she and the DTB team not only want to make it clear that they will take part in the finals in Seville, but also gain momentum for the strong WTA tournament in Stuttgart afterwards.
