Football professional Amon-Ra St. Brown remains loyal to the Detroit Lions in the NFL – probably with a record-breaking salary.
The 24-year-old German-American confirmed corresponding reports about a new contract until 2028 on Instagram. “Four more years,” the wide receiver wrote about the same content of his short video message. The son of a Leverkusen mother and an American father has been playing for the Lions since 2021 and is one of the best pass receivers in the league.
Highest paid wide receiver?
ESPN and NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, among others, had previously reported that St. Brown would collect a total of $120 million (around €112 million) by the end of his contract in 2028, of which $77 million was guaranteed.
With an average annual salary of $30 million, St. Brown would become the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL – more expensive than Tyreek Hill, more expensive than Davante Adams, more expensive than Cooper Kupp and CeeDee Lamb. Neither St. Brown nor the Lions have commented on the numbers yet.
Motivational draft list
St. Brown had to wait a long time at the 2021 draft and only went to the Lions in the fourth round at position 112. He was annoyed by the lack of interest from clubs at the time and wrote a list in his notebook: the names of the 16 receivers who were selected before him. Before each training session, he read it to himself three times as motivation. There should be great satisfaction, St. Brown has left them behind.
This is not just because of the first “big deal”, but also in terms of sport. St. Brown is quarterback Jared Goff’s preferred passing target, and his numbers have been steadily increasing since his rookie season. His catches increased from 90 (21/22) to 106 (22/23) to 119 (23/24), his touchdowns from five to six to ten, his yards from 912 to 1,161 to 1,515. The curve is rising and there is no end in sight.
Narrowly missed the Super Bowl
The fact that Detroit celebrated its first playoff win in more than 30 years at the beginning of the year, then advanced to the conference championships and narrowly missed out on making it to the Super Bowl also has a lot to do with St. Brown. That’s why it was clear that the Lions would extend with the newcomer, and it was also clear that the franchise would have to dig deep into its pockets to do so.
Target player St. Brown, whose older brother Equanimeous (27) recently moved from the Chicago Bears to the New Orleans Saints, should not only help the team from the Motor City make it to the Super Bowl for the first time. He should help bring the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Detroit.
