At the ATP 1000 Masters tournament in Monte Carlo, things went really well for Alexander Zverev in doubles. He and his doubles partner Marcelo Melo fought confidently from match to match and faced the Belgian duo Veilen and Gille in the final today. The Belgians were ultimately a touch better and were able to win the first Masters title of their career with 5:7, 6:3 and 10:5.
The first set went perfectly for Zverev and Melo. The doubles were convincing both at the net and from the baseline and Zverev closed the first set with a backhand volley winner. In the second set there was an early break against Zverev and Melo and it worked more and more for the Belgian doubles. Zverev and Melo became a little more uncertain. The Belgians won the second set and also got off to a strong start in the match tiebreak. Zverev and Melo had five match points against them and Veilen and Gille used their second to win the title. It would have been the third title for the German in doubles. Today Zverev, fifth in the world rankings, is heading straight to Munich.
Here is the double tableau
