‘Ajax makes first contacts with Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández through intermediaries’

Ajax has not yet given up hope of appointing Xavi Hernández as head coach next summer, the Spanish newspaper reports Sport Friday afternoon. The 44-year-old coach is in his final months at FC Barcelona and is said to have been approached ‘through intermediaries’ for the soon-to-be vacant trainer position in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

The current head coach of the Amsterdam team, John van ‘t Schip, will remain active in a different role after the summer, which means that the current number five in the Eredivisie is looking for a successor. At the beginning of this month, the aforementioned newspaper first reported interest in Xavi, who announced at the end of January that he would be leaving Barcelona after two and a half seasons.

“The Dutch club has tried to contact Xavi through intermediaries,” Sport writes. “However, the coach is focused on the remainder of the season,” it reads. A tough task awaits the Catalans on Sunday: The classic against arch-rivals Real Madrid, at the Santiago Bernabéu. With a defeat, the season is as good as over for the reigning national champion: Real increases its lead in LaLiga to eleven points over the club that was painfully knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain last week.

“Xavi could be the ideal candidate for Ajax,” the article continues. “He fits the football profile and the concept of the game, and is also committed to young players and the youth academy,” the newspaper argues. It is not clear whether Xavi wants to start working again immediately: “He initially had the idea of starting one sabbatical to take a year.”
