After reaching the semi-finals

For the first time since 2020 and only for the third time ever, two German teams, FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, are in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Both Thomas Tuchel and Edin Terzic immortalized themselves in the history books of the competition in different ways.
The FCB coach, who left at the end of the season, celebrated reaching the semi-finals for the third time in his coaching career – always with a different club. No other German coach has achieved this before him. Tuchel led Paris Saint-Germain to the last four for the first time in 2020. At that time, France’s series champions prevailed against RB Leipzig, but then failed in the final against FC Bayern. A year later he was in the same position with Chelsea FC and secured the title with the Blues after Real Madrid were eliminated in the semi-finals – a good omen for the coach ahead of the duels with the Spaniards at the end of April and beginning of May? In fact, the 50-year-old’s record against the Royals is positive, with only one defeat in eight games.

Either way, Tuchel is approaching the traditional showdown between the two clubs with anticipation, but also respect: “I don’t think we are the top favorites in this constellation. Sure, Real Madrid, you almost have to ask, who else? Carlo Ancelotti, who else? This is one of the hardest games you can play. Real Madrid managed to win at Manchester City. That is of course an incredible exclamation mark. Semi-final against the biggest club in the world. But we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
BVB coach Terzic follows in the footsteps of Klopp, Scala and Hitzfeld
What Tuchel achieved for the third time with three different clubs is only the fourth time for BVB in the club’s history – excluding the semi-finals of the European Champions’ Cup in 1963/64. In 1997, Ottmar Hitzfeld led the Westphalian team to their first and only premier class title to date; the 3-1 win in the final against Juventus Turin was preceded by two narrow victories against Manchester United. Just a year later, Hitzfeld’s successor Nevio Scala led Borussia around Andreas Möller, Lars Ricken and Stefan Klos to the semi-finals again, but that time the final stop was against Real Madrid. In 2013 at Wembley, the Black and Yellows last reached the final against Bayern (1:2), before BVB eliminated Real.
Now Terzic is following in the footsteps of his predecessors – he is the youngest BVB coach to date to make it to the semi-finals. By advancing against Atlético, Terzic also moves into the top 10 of the youngest coaches to advance to the last four in the history of the competition. “I believe that we are a much more stable team than we were in September and November,” said the coach, referring to the duels against Paris Saint-Germain, which Dortmund had already met in the group phase (0:2, 1:1 ). “If you’re already there, it makes sense to fight for the final. We will try everything.”
