2024 NFL Mock Draft: Packers Land Top Defensive Talent

GREEN BAY, Wis. – In a three-round mock draft for Pro Football NetworkLorenzo Reyna gave the Packers a “gift” by selecting Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.

“This is a gift pick for the Green Bay Packers in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft,” Reyna wrote. “Considering Jaire Alexander’s nebulous future, Green Bay gets a near similar cornerback who broke up a combined 38 passes in the last two years and one of the top Group of Five talents available in Quinyon Mitchell.”

Mitchell was a big-time playmaker at Toledo. Yeah, but that’s against MAC competition. How will he fare in the NFL? He answered those questions as best he could at the Senior Bowl and then the Scouting Combine, where he measured 6-foot 1/8 and ran his 40 in 4.33 seconds.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Mitchell is the favorite to be the first cornerback selected. The Super Bowl-contending Packers have a big question mark at corner opposite Alexander.

In the second round, the choices were Florida State receiver Keon Coleman and Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten. In the third, Reyna went with Washington State safety Jaden Hicks and Miami defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III.

At No. 41, Coleman was the choice over all the linebackers and safeties in the class.

Draft Countdown (7 Rounds): Iowa DB Cooper DeJean

Shane Hallam didn’t provide any explanationsbut the first pick doesn’t need one. Cornerback? Safety? Whatever, DeJean would be an instant hit for a defense that has some noteworthy holes in the secondary.

The second-round picks helped the defense, as well.

Who will be the safety opposite Xavier McKinney? Utah’s Cole Bishop has a strong complementary skill-set to join the playmaking McKinney.

Who will be the third linebacker in the 4-3? NC State’s Payton Wilson won the Butkus Award as the best linebacker in the nation, then delivered a superb Scouting Combine. Wilson is a first-round talent with significant injury concerns. Taking him at No. 58 would make the risk more palatable.

What about the offensive line? Wyoming’s Frank Crum and South Dakota State’s Mason McCormick will help the depth at tackle and guard, respectively, if nothing else. Who is Crum? The 6-foot-8, 313-pounder started 36 games at right tackle before moving to left tackle in 2023, when he allowed four sacks. He ran his 40 in 4.94 seconds and is a powerful run blocker.

Among the Day 3 picks were two specialists.

PFF: Iowa DB Cooper DeJean

The position questions have nothing to do with a lack of talent, Steve Palazzolo said. Rather, it’s how to best take advantage of his skills.

“His footwork, ball skills and explosive athleticism make him an impactful outside cornerback — one with All-Pro potential,” he said.

CBS Sports: Iowa DB Cooper DeJean

Pete Prisco went with the most-mocked player ahead of cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry and offensive linemen Graham Barton and Jordan Morgan.

“Corner is a must and Cooper DeJean has the tools to be a good cover player. He could also play safety down the line.”

Bleacher Report (3 Rounds): Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry

This comes down to what the coaching staff thinks of the current cast of characters. If they’re not sold on Stokes or Valentine, McKinstry could be the pick.

Said B/R’s Cory Giddings: “McKinstry is a long-limbed cornerback with great size,” Giddings said. “He plays with good lateral movement when in press and quickly gets in phase and into the hip pocket. He’s a long strider with the top-end speed to carry defenders deep and does a good job sinking hips when getting out of breaks. The two-time first-team All-SEC selection is calm with the ball in the air and does a good job of getting his head around to play the ball.”

The second-round picks delivered high-profile players with Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin, a premier ballhawk, and Florida State running back Trey Benson, a premier breakaway threat.

Linebacker and offensive line – but not a tackle – filled out the third round.

ESPN (Mel Kiper): Georgia OT Amarius Mims

Here’s the breakdown of Kiper’s two-round mock draft.

NFL.com: Georgia OT Amarius Mims

Rhett Lewis went with the massive Mims over DeJean and Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.

“The Packers have a compelling collection of young skill-position talent surrounding QB Jordan Love,” he wrote, “so this year, they opt to find a long-term replacement for David Bakhtiari at LT.”

Packer Central (7 Rounds): Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton

Jacob Westendorf’s mock includes Guyton, Florida State receiver Keon Coleman and Michigan running back Blake Corum.
