1. FC Kaiserslautern suffered a heavy blow in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga. At the start of the 29th matchday, the Palatinate team lost 1:2 (1:0) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth despite being in the lead. The goals were scored by Lautern’s Ragnar Ache (18th minute) and Fürth’s Robert Wagner (54th, 90th + 5).

The game started well for the guests. After a corner there was confusion in the Fürth defense. The ball bounced back and forth a little between friend and foe before Ache shot it over the line (18th). It was the FCK’s first offensive action.

Fürth was even more harmless going forward. Lautern’s goalkeeper Robin Himmelmann was practically unemployed in the first half. But Kaiserslautern couldn’t create another chance either.

Fürth like a different team

After the break, Fürth was much more awake, Tim Lemperle shot straight away, but Himmelmann was there (50th). But the second attempt was successful: Robert Wagner hit the corner from 13 meters (54′).

Fürth now had everything under control and created further excellent opportunities through Branimir Hrgota and Dennis Srbeny. Not much came from Kaiserslautern during this phase. Dickson Abiama shot over the goal after just over an hour.

Louders further down

After twenty minutes, Fürth’s pressure phase was over again. The game was now balanced and the draw was actually already fixed. Then the Fürths attacked again. In the end, Wagner slid into a Hrgota cross and scored (90+5).

“This is of course a bitter defeat. I actually had the feeling that the game should have been called off. But we will get the team back together – for sure,” Kaiserslautern coach Friedhelm Funkel told the Sportschau after the game.

Kaiserslautern is still deep in the relegation battle, the Palatinate team still has 29 points and is in a direct relegation zone. Greuther Fürth, on the other hand, can be happy; with 42 points, a relegation place is still possible.
