World Vice Champion Martín won the Grand Prix of Portugal MotoGP

Martín was waved at the finish line by the famous football coach José Mourinho with the checkered flag in Portimao. The 26-year-old native of Madrid took his sixth win in the strongest category with a lead of 882 thousandths of a second ahead of the Italian Enea Bastianini. MotoGP rookie Pedro Acosta from Spain finished third in just his second race, making it the third-youngest rider in history to reach the podium among the elite. The nineteen-year-old Moto2 and Moto3 world champion was helped onto the podium by the fall of Saturday’s sprint winner Maverick Viňales at the beginning of the last lap.

Even the reigning two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia from Italy did not reach the finish line. The winner of the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix crashed with less than three laps to go after contact with former champion Marc Márquez of Spain. The two stars still got their bikes going, but Bagnaia headed to the pits and Márquez finished unscored in 16th place.

The Grand Prix of Portugal was held without the Czech participation, as the regular participant of the Moto2 championship, Filip Salač, has undergone forearm surgery. He should return to the WC in mid-April in Austin.
