Women’s Basketball Clubs Demand Expansion to Two Divisions from French Basketball Federation

In a joint press release, sent by the union of Women’s Basketball League clubs (UCLFB), the basketball coaches’ union (SCB) and the national basketball players’ union (SNB), the Women’s League and Women’s League 2 clubs and their actors are demanding from the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) the transition to two divisions of 14 clubs compared to 12 today. With, ideally, taking effect for the 2025-2026 season.

For now, the FFBB has only acceded to part of the requests, by ratifying the move to 14 clubs in LF2 from the 2025-2026 financial year while opponents consider the change “necessary from 2024-2025 “.

“We want the Women’s League to increase to 14 in 2025-2026, which requires deciding now to benefit from the next season in transition form”

“All the players concerned, who are all in solidarity with this request, are determined and hope that this leads to reasonable negotiations,” a club president who wished to remain anonymous “so that it is not possible to say that it is a fight of individuals.” And added: “We are ready to consider symbolic actions. We want the Women’s League to increase to 14 in 2025-2026, which requires deciding now to benefit from the next season in transition. We don’t want a blurred horizon as presented with the reformed LF2 and a “we’ll see then”. »

The complaints from the players concerned notably highlight the need to play more matches (two additional at home), to benefit from “a simplified descent system (the last of the regular season goes down)” while to date the last four of the Women’s League in the regular season face each other during “play-down” (mini-tournament for relegation).

Issues to be resolved as a priority before, potentially, looking at competition issues, and in particular that imposed by the WNBA which is now pushing franchise residents to leave their European club – such as Kennedy Burke for Villeneuve-d’Ascq – before the end of the season.
