After the first half of the season, 1. FC Union Berlin was still in acute danger of relegation in the Bundesliga. The Iron Ones have now stabilized. The winter new arrivals have very different contributions to this upswing.

    Kevin Vogt

Even though 1. FC Union Berlin said goodbye to the winter break with a 2-0 home win against 1. FC Köln, the sporting situation at the turn of the year was alarming: only three points separated the Eisernen (15th) from the relegation place and the two direct relegation.

Since then, the Köpenickers have been able to stabilize themselves in the 1st Bundesliga, increase the buffer to the relegation place to nine points and climb to 13th place. Not least thanks to Kevin Vogt, who moved from TSG Hoffenheim to FCU in the winter. Since then, the 32-year-old central defender has been in Union’s starting line-up in ten of eleven possible games; he was only missing against VfL Wolfsburg due to a yellow card suspension.

Immediately after the signing, FCU coach Nenad Bjelica was convinced of Vogt and attested to his “leader qualities”. With the veteran as a stabilizer in the defensive line, Bjelica returned to the tried and tested 3-5-2 system.

While the Iron Men conceded three or more goals in six league games in the first half of the current season, they have never conceded more than two since Vogt’s arrival in Berlin. The Köpenickers have kept a clean slate three times since then – and especially abroad, Union will appear much safer and more compact again in 2024.

    Yorbe Vertessen

Union Berlin spent almost five million euros on the services of Belgian attacker Yorbe Vertessen, who moved from PSV Eindhoven to the Bundesliga. The 23-year-old can be used flexibly on offense, but has so far mainly played as a center forward for Köpenick. In the position where there has been a gap since the winter departures of attackers Sheraldo Becker (to Real Sociedad), Kevin Behrens (VfL Wolfsburg) and David Datro Fofana (on loan from Chelsea FC, now on loan to Burnley FC).

After initial difficulties, Vertessen was particularly convincing in the last encounter before the international break, when Union achieved a 2-1 home win against SV Werder Bremen. In that game, the Belgian showed – of all times when Bjelica went for a 3-4-3, with Vertessen on one of the two wings – what value he can have for the Iron team’s offensive and switching game, was well integrated into the action and scored himself to make it 1-0 and set up the winning goal for Brenden Aaronson, who completed a combination worth seeing.

In total, Vertessen has made three starting eleven and four substitute appearances in the Berlin jersey so far (one goal, two assists).

Has fallen short of expectations so far: Chris Bedia. | Source: IMAGO / Contrast

    Chris Bedia

With the recommendation of ten goals and three assists in 17 appearances for Servette FC in the current season, Chris Bedia moved to the Alte Försterei in the winter. At this point, the Ivorian center forward was leading the top scorer list in the Swiss Super League – the expectations and advance praise were correspondingly high.

As of the end of March 2024, the following can be said: So far, Bedia remains an unfulfilled promise. The attacker only came off the bench four times for the Iron Men in the Bundesliga, ironically in all four defeats that FCU has suffered since the turn of the year. In a total of 43 minutes of play, Bedia has not managed to score a goal or provide an assist. “He didn’t have an easy time,” said FCU coach Bjelica in “kicker” about the new addition. “He can still improve on the number of duels. We’ve seen Mikkel Kaufmann a little better recently, which is why he’s been given more minutes.”

After all, the 28-year-old was allowed to start from the start in the friendly against second division side 1. FC Magdeburg last Thursday – and promptly marked the final score of 3-1 for Köpenick.

And even though it has been a difficult start for Bedia personally so far in Berlin, his coach is satisfied with the overall situation in 2024: “There is competition in all positions. I am glad that we have such a luxury problem.”
