Formula 1: Why is the race at the Australian GP in Melbourne taking place on a Sunday again?

The fact that Formula 1 races take place on a Sunday is not an exception but rather the rule. On a normal race weekend there are two free practice sessions on Friday, one practice session and qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday. There are deviations on race weekends with a sprint race.

Formula 1 is returning to normality in Melbourne.

There is a simple reason why the races have always been on a Saturday so far this year. Since the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan began this year on March 10th, a Sunday, the decision-makers at Formula 1 decided to postpone the second race of the season by one day in consideration of this. So the journey took place on March 9th.

Since, according to F1 regulations, there must always be at least seven days between two races – in order to be able to cope with the major logistical efforts – the first race of the season was also moved forward by one day – to a Saturday.
