Michael Lorenzen Signs One-Year Contract with World Series Champion Texas Rangers

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Michael Lorenzen signed a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers on Friday, giving the World Series champions another starting pitcher heading into the regular season.

The deal is worth $4.5M and the right-hander can add $2.5M in performance bonuses.

The Rangers needed help on the mound as Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer could be out for a long time recovering from injuries.

Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will be the starting pitcher in the opening game in Arlington on Thursday, against the Chicago Cubs.

Eovaldi was 5-0 in the playoffs last year.

The 32-year-old Lorenzen was a first-time All-Star in 2023 with the Detroit Tigers, before moving to Philadelphia at the trade deadline.

On August 9, he pitched a no-hitter against Washington in his second start with the Phillies, his first at home.

He had a combined record of 9-9 with a 4.18 ERA in 29 games, including 25 starts.

In nine seasons in the big leagues, Lorenzen has a record of 40-38 with a 4.11 ERA, in 342 games.

He made his major league baseball debut with Cincinnati in 2015, appearing in 27 games, including 21 as a starter.

He then served as a reliever until 2022, joining the Angels rotation.

DeGrom had surgery on his right elbow last June. Scherzer underwent back surgery in December.
