Noemí Monroy, a lawyer specialized in sports affairs and one of the promoters of the initiative to establish a base salary in professional sports, indicated that they expect equal empathy and support from the deputies so that this project is voted on without profound changes and decreed. as law in approximately two months, especially to avoid delays due to the elections.

“Its approval in the Senate is a historic step; a reform to the labor law in professional sports has never passed in full. Far from the comments that were made at the beginning due to misinformation, support is now shown.

In the Chamber of Deputies we will seek the support of different parliamentary groups, taking advantage of the fact that there are former athletes, to subscribe to this initiative. We hope they do not make additional changes, this would delay the process, because if there are relevant modifications, it would return to the Senate, he said.

Unanimously, on Tuesday, the upper house approved reforms to the Federal Labor Law (LFT) in search of equal pay in professional sports, with the establishment of a base salary for men and women.

The women’s soccer community is the one that has placed the greatest emphasis on this aspect, since the players receive average salaries of 8 thousand to 12 thousand pesos per month, while there are soccer players like the Tigres striker, André Pierre-Gignac, who They receive up to five million dollars annually. Although the initiative does not seek equal salaries, it does seek decent salaries that cover the needs of athletes.

The Liga Mx was concerned about the information that initially emerged weeks ago without the proper context. With a dialogue they saw that they have also worked on these issues and now they have a different position, Monroy explained.

Security and other protocols

This project also contemplates the protection of other labor rights, such as health insurance, which several athletes lack even when their profession puts their lives at risk. The implementation of protocols against cases of gender violence, harassment and workplace bullying is another of the important aspects that is promoted, since many professional leagues do not have these tools.

Monroy indicated that when this initiative became known, athletes from various disciplines have approached, such as basketball, volleyball and even wrestling, who are more concerned about good medical care and decent payment. However, until now they have not had any contact with people from boxing, one of the highest risk sports and where there is a wide wage gap.

The people who would receive the rights have come, but not the employer figure, we hope that with this progress some interested parties will re-emerge to join the dialogue.
