The twelfth edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen for women has become a prey for Marianne Vos. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider was too fast for fellow escapee Shirin van Anrooij in a sprint-à-deux.
It was her 250th professional victory on the road for the 36-year-old Vos, who has never won the traditional prelude to next Sunday’s Tour of Flanders.
Vos wins Dwars door Vlaanderen after standing still for half an hour
Behind the Dutch duo, Italy’s Letizia Paternoster finished third, just ahead of Belgian world champion Lottte Kopecky.
Half an hour delay
At just under 70 kilometers Puck Pieterse shook things up considerably. She rode away from the peloton. Demi Vollering and her SD Worx teammate Kopecky joined in, with Vos and Elise Longho Borghini in their wake. A leading group to compete with.
But if the front runners had any nefarious plans, they were thwarted by an accident further along the course, which forced the organization to neutralize the race. The peloton even came to a standstill.
NOS
Only after a half-hour delay could cycling resume, but the Côte de Trieu and Hotond, two of the nine slopes in Dwars door Vlaanderen, were deleted and the route shortened by 20 kilometers.
Two cobblestone sections later, a group had separated again and again the composition was a solid one: Longho Borghini, Shirin van Anrooij, Pieterse, Letizia Paternoster, Vos and Kopecky.
Kopecky’s teammate Vollering, who announced today that she will leave SD Worx after this season, already knew that it would not be two in a row for her in Waregem: a flat rear tire set her far back.
At the front, Lidl-Trek, with Van Anrooij and Longho Borghini, was the only one represented with two riders and it was therefore not surprising that they took the initiative. Van Anrooij attacked with 12 kilometers to go and was only joined by Vos.
Second win
Pieterse and world champion Kopecky, who has already won the Tour of Flanders twice but not yet Dwars door Vlaanderen, tried to close the gap, but soon had to bow their heads.
Vos then took her second victory of the season after Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. She secured the tenth Dutch victory in Waregem.
