On the 27th, at the Miyahara Sports Park Baseball Stadium (Yonan 4, Utsunomiya City), which Utsunomiya City has been undergoing renovation work since 2022, a commemorative opening ceremony was held by city officials and a commemorative game between students from nearby junior high schools. It will begin operation on April 1st.

Mayor Eiichi Sato said at the ceremony, “I hope that starting with the commemorative match, this sports park will be used by more people as a base for civic sports.”

Following in the footsteps of the Utsunomiya Permanent Baseball Stadium, which opened in 1932, it opened in 1961 at its current location, about 500 meters southwest of the old stadium. It had been closed since 2017 due to deterioration due to damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The “membrane roof” behind the back net is also used at Kanseki Stadium Tochigi and has been well received.

The total construction cost of the new stadium is approximately 1.697 billion yen. The field, which is the same as before the renovation, is 97.5 meters long on both wings and 122 meters long in center field, with black soil and artificial turf in the infield and natural grass in the outfield. Commercial use was prohibited, and the 9,000-seat stand was reduced to approximately 1,200 seats. While the lighting equipment was removed, a “membrane roof” made of fluororesin with excellent light and heat shielding properties was installed to cover the back seats of the back net. With barrier-free considerations in mind, an elevator, multipurpose restroom, and wheelchair-only seats have also been newly installed. It is intended to be used primarily for youth baseball and grassland baseball, and there are no plans for official high school baseball games.

A “history tradition signboard” has also been installed on the grounds to guide you through the history of the stadium. Utsunomiya Permanent Stadium was the site of the 2nd Japan-America Baseball Tournament in 1934, where Eiji Sawamura (then Giants) and Babe Ruth (then Yankees) played against each other, and it is also known as the “Japanese Baseball Holy Land” recognized by the Japan Baseball Organization (NPB) and other organizations.・Introducing the fact that it was selected as one of the top 150 famous places.

Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reservations for use (charges apply) can be made through the city public facilities reservation information system or by phone. For inquiries, please call the sports park at 028 (658) 1052. (Yasuhiro Muto)
